Embracing the Autumn Chill - Wild Swimming in the Pyrenees
As the vibrant colours of autumn start to paint the landscape, tree by tree and the air carries a refreshing crispness, we continue our daily wild swimming ritual. We started as two and now we are three and always Obi and Plum. There is glorious wild swimming here in the summer and with the recent heatwaves, the cool rivers and fresh water of the lake are a must each day. However, the temperature of the air and water is a little fresher now and some days we have to dig a little deeper to find the courage.
There are two parts to Lac de Montbel – the constant lake where Ospreys live and 2m catfish lie underwater in dark, shady corners and the large lake, currently depleted of water after the summer although fed by a diversion of the cold waters of the River L’Hers. It’s a magical time of year as gone are the holiday makers and only a few outdoor enthusiasts, whether anglers, paddle boarders and dog walkers can be seen on the water and on the expansive exposed land.
Serene Sunrises at Lac de Montbel
Sunrise is a magical time at Lac de Montbel. As the first rays of the sun gently kiss the surface of the lake, a surreal serenity envelopes the landscape. The sun’s reflection forms a shimmering pathway on the water. The cool morning breeze carries a hint of anticipation as we wander to the water’s edge and it’s always a relief to feel the warmth of the sun as it rises. It’s also the best start in the morning for Obi and Plum. They gallop to the water’s edge. Obi is in like a shot and Plum likes to paddle in a lady like fashion.
Stepping into the lake as the sun paints the sky with hues of pink and orange, there's an ethereal sense of freedom. The water embraces you, awakening your senses and invigorating your spirit. It's an exhilarating feeling to be at one with nature, surrounded by the pristine beauty of the Pyrenees. There is often a beautiful mist over the lake that carries the sunlight and my bathing buddies are covered in a warm golden glow.
In the autumnal embrace of October, the lake's waters are refreshing but not icy, providing a comfortable yet exhilarating swimming experience. Floating amidst the stunning natural surroundings, it makes you feel alive when you start the working day at the computer.
The ‘Wild Water Women’ are committed to continuing our daily dips throughout the winter so watch this space…
